| UN Agencies in Saudi Arabia Carry Several Activities on “Environment” in Commemoration of the UN day for 2007 – Visits to Schools to Launch a Photography Contest on Environment |
26 November 2007, Riyadh,
The United Nations agencies that are represented in Saudi Arabia carried out various activities and events to celebrate the 62nd anniversary of the United Nations. All activities came to highlight the issue of Environment in the Kingdom.
The first of a series of activities consisted of a number of visits by UNDP’s national goodwill ambassadors, Mrs. Muna Abu-Sulayman and Captain Sami Al-Jaber, along with UNDP CP Staff members in charge of the Environment portfolio, to 10 schools of girls and boys in various Saudi regions (Riyadh, Jeddah, and Khubar) to deliver a presentation on Environment, and launch a photography contest among the students.
The students were invited to take photos that reflected either an environmental improvement or degradation in Saudi Arabia. Seventy-four inspiring photos were received from the girls’ schools; none from the boys’ schools. A panel of judges consisting of selected UN members, UNDP’s national goodwill ambassadors, and a photography expert, evaluated the 74 photos and selected the best six. The photo by Ms. Ghousoun Al-Bloushy from Al-Dahran Schools in Khubar ranked the first. The second rank was given to two different photos, one that was taken by Ms. Nouf Al-Mugren & Ms. Sara Al-Saud from the Kingdom Schools in Riyadh, and the other that was taken by Ms. Sara Farhoud from Najd Schools in Riyadh. Three photos were given third rank, one taken by Ms. Hanadi ba Jubeir from My Little House Schools in Jeddah, another by Ms. Sara Al-Issa from Kingdom Schools in Riyadh, and the last by Ms. Haya Al-Twaijri from Riyadh Schools in Riyadh.
All students were honored during the UN day reception/ dinner on Monday 26 November 2007, where they received certificates of appreciation and some UN gift items and booklets.
