07 March 2007, Riyadh,
The “Wives of the Heads of Mission” Association in Saudi Arabia (WHOM) joined for the first time the worldwide celebration of Women's Day. The celebration took place at the UN House in Riyadh.
This remarkably well organized event was the occasion for the members to show their talents and share their experiences among themselves and with the distinguished Saudi ladies who were invited.
The program started with a welcoming speech by Ms. Mayssam Tamim, Officer in Charge of the United Nations Development Program Office, and an opening speech by Ms. Antonia Benlamlih, wife of the UN Resident Coordinator & UNDP Resident Representative, and President of WHOM Association.
The commemoration event involved reading the message of the UN Secretary-General on this special occasion by Mrs. Young Soon Lee, wife of the Korean Ambassador. This was followed by: a projection of a short movie "Ten years after Beijing"; a presentation by Mrs. Rania Abdeen, wife of the Ambassador of Palestine on "The situation of the Palestinian women"; and a presentation by Mrs. Anita Pratap, Ex CNN reporter and wife of the Secretary General of the International Energy Forum, on "The challenge of being a woman war correspondent".
The cultural program, which followed, consisted of: a flute minuet interpreted by Christine Davies, wife of the Ambassador of South Africa; poems recited by Dr. Olga Kulach, wife of the Ambassador of Poland; Indian classical dance by Mrs. Yasmine Farook Maricar, daughter of the Ambassador of India; Thai dance organized by Mrs. Usana Chirapant, wife of the Charge d' Affaires of the Thai Embassy and her friends from other embassies; short demonstration of folkloric Panamanian dance by Antonia Benlamlih, wife of the UN Coordinator; African dance organized by Mrs. Hamza Fatoumata, wife of the Ambassador of Cote d'Ivoire and a group of wives of African ambassadors; and finally all ladies joined in singing "Heal the World" by Michael Jackson.
The Women's Day celebration ended around a delicious lunch prepared by the members and representing tastes and flavours from around the world.
